Rediscovering Me: The Joy of Monthly Self-Care in Motherhood

Somewhere in the whirlwind of motherhood between school drop-offs, sports practices, meal planning, and late-night comforting. ”I forgot about me. Not in a dramatic, don't recognize myself kind of way, but in the slow, quiet way that happens when you pour every ounce of yourself into others."

Then, three months ago, I made a small but powerful decision: once a month, I would get my nails done. It seemed simple enough, but I had no idea how much joy it would bring me.
A Moment Just for Me
That first appointment, I almost felt guilty. There were a million other things I could be doing laundry, errands, planning meals for the week. But as I sat there, hands resting on the table, watching the nail technician carefully shape and polish my nails, I felt something unexpected relief. I exhaled in a way I hadn't in a long time.
It wasn't about the nails themselves (though they were beautiful). It was about pausing. It was about remembering that I, too, deserve to be cared for.
The Power of Small Acts of Self-Care
Self-care doesn't have to be extravagant or expensive. It doesn't require a weekend getaway or a day at the spa though those are wonderful too. It can be as simple as an hour dedicated to something that makes you feel good, something that reminds you of the person you were before motherhood consumed every part of your schedule.
For me, its getting my nails done. For you, it might be reading a book, taking a long bath, going for a walk alone, or sipping your coffee while it's still hot. The point is, these moments matter. They help us refill our cups so we can continue to pour into the people we love.
The Reminder I Didn't t Know I Needed
Three months into this new habit, I realize I didn't just need self-care I needed permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to put myself on my own priority list. Permission to enjoy something just because it makes me happy.
Motherhood is beautiful, but its also demanding. We spend so much time making sure everyone else is taken care of that we forget we are worthy of care too.
And God reminds us of this truth:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Rest is not selfish. It is necessary. It is a gift from God, an invitation to let go and trust that even when we pause, He is still holding everything together.
So, if you've been neglecting yourself in the hustle of life, consider this your reminder: you matter. Your well-being matters. And sometimes, something as small as a fresh coat of polish can be the thing that brings you back to yourself.
