Gideon: A Study in Courage and Trust

Point 1: God use ordinary people.

"When God encountered Gideon, He saw beyond Gideon's limited self-perception and recognized his latent potential. Through Gideon's story, God shows us how He uses ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things. In Judges 6:13-14, God affirms Gideon, saying, "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior... Go in the strength you have and save Israel." God had already chosen Gideon, acknowledging the warrior He knew him to be. Gideon's story reassures us that God has pre-selected us for the tasks ahead. It demonstrates how God will be with us in the tasks He calls us to, empowering us to overcome fear and accomplish His purposes."

Point 2: God is patient and faithful in our doubts

"Gideon responded to God's call with doubt, saying he was the weakest and least in his family, unsure why God chose him to defeat the Midianites. I deeply relate to Gideon's uncertainty. How often have I doubted God, hesitating to pursue opportunities, citing lack of experience or qualifications? We limit God's power in our lives when we let fear hold us back from trusting Him. In Judges 6:17, Gideon begins to come to terms with God's calling, asking for a sign to confirm it's truly God speaking to him. I, too, have fallen into this pattern, seeking multiple signs from God when He's placed a daunting vision in my heart. But God patiently pursues us, as He did with Gideon, providing reassurance and signs to overcome our fears.

Fear is the stumbling block of courage. When we operate in fear, we limit God's potential to work mightily in our lives."

Point 3: God’s power Shine.

"Gideon's story takes a dramatic turn as his army is drastically reduced from 32,000 to just 300 men, leaving them severely outnumbered. Yet, in this seemingly hopeless situation, God's power is magnified, culminating in a miraculous victory. This pivotal moment in Gideon's journey demonstrates that our weaknesses and limitations create opportunities for God's strength to shine through us. When we acknowledge our dependence on Him alone.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where am I feeling outnumbered or overwhelmed in my life right now?

  2.  How can I acknowledge my dependence on God and invite Him to shine through my weaknesses?

  3. How can I step back and let God's strength work through me, even when all seems hopeless?
